The Missing Podcast Australia

The Missing delves into the mysterious disappearances of everyday Australians.

In Australia, some 38,000 missing persons reports are made every year; that’s equivalent to one report every 15 minutes. While most are found quickly, for those who do not return home, a never-ending nightmare begins for their loved ones. The Missing is dedicated to bringing them home. Someone, somewhere, knows something.

About The Host

Meni Caroutas was always going to become a cop or a journalist. He left university to join the NSW Police Force and was first stationed at Darlinghurst and Kings Cross, which he describes as being the Carnival , circus and Mardi Gras all rolled into one. He rose quickly through the ranks, working with the Kings Cross detectives office during the notorious 1980’s. After going public on the ABC to oust corrupt cops, Meni was spotted by a TV producer and offered a reporter’s job on tabloid current affairs program Hard Copy. In 1991, Meni left the police force and began his media career.

Meni has worked as a researcher, producer, Senior Reporter, Chief of Staff, and Series producer across such shows as Missing Persons Unit, Wanted, Border Security, Today Tonight, A Current Affair, The Suspects, and Inside, a documentary on the NSW Prison system.

Meni rates Missing Person’s Unit as the most rewarding job he has ever done. Across five series of the program, Meni saw first hand the anguish and helplessness felt by families of people who go missing.  He’s committed to helping families find closure.  He hopes that with the help of the community, ‘The Missing’ will provide crucial information that will assist police to solve these cases. Someone, somewhere, must know SOMETHING, and together we can make a difference.

Meni Caroutas has worked alongside Sky News Australia to discuss and investigate further the cases of missing people across Australia. Watch his Sky News videos here.

‘While you and your families go about your business in a safe and civil manner, it’s the cops who stand between you and some very nasty and scary people. Occasionally rules were broken to keep the order and to keep you safe.’

When Meni Caroutas joined the police in 1984, he was an innocent in the world. Two years at Darlinghurst Police Station (which included Kings Cross in its command), the busiest and toughest police precinct in Australia, changed all that. This is the story of the years he spent smack bang in the powder keg of the toughest and most notorious red-light district of Australia, a melting pot of contradictions that proved to be the best teacher a rookie cop could ever have.

Think of this as a very, very hairy ‘Call the Midwife’, a catapult into a place that could frighten and intimidate and excite and fascinate all at the same time, with a group of people who would make Elmore Leonard proud. If you read only one chapter, make it Chapter 9. ‘What the hell were you thinking’.
